Mollie...An aperture is an adjustable iris in your lens. The bigger the iris, the more light, smaller iris, less light. F-stops are the stops/measurements of light....f-stop 1.8 lets in more light as f-stop 22 lets in less light. I'm not good writing this...:( I could explain better if you were here and I had a lens to show you...hope it helps a little though.
